on ethics

My days of wearing nothing but corduroy and listening to Bob Dylan on repeat are long behind me. I suppose it's only natural for an almost 40 year old man to lose some of his youthful naivety and boyish ideals.

Earlier this year I migrated all my projects away from Vercel to Cloudflare and switched frameworks from Next.js to Tanstack Start. There was no technical motivation behind the move, everything was working fine and best of all certain projects such as this website were running on Vercel's generous free tier meaning all I was paying was circa $10 a year for the domain cost.

So what was the reason for the switch? This tweet.

I cannot in good concience have anything to do with a company run by a man that is so happy to stand smiling next to such a deplorable human being. This unfortunately wasn't his first faux pas but it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

In the old days performing such a migration would have been fairly tricky and certainly taken a good chunk of time but with the help of Cursor I was able to get the whole job done in a single weekend.

With code becoming cheaper and more commoditised can we really justify using the technology of a company we find personally objectionable?
